JUAN DOMINGO ROMERO
by Stanley A. Lucero
Juan Domingo Romero, b. 1749, and his wife Maria Barbara Montoya, b. 1756. are a very interesting and elusive couple to track down. They lived in El Valle near Las Trampas, Taos, New Mexico. I have looked for records at Santa Cruz de La Canada and La Mision de San Lorenzo, Picuris in addition to online searches and many emails..
There were at least two Juan Domingo Romeros alive in the area. Which Juan Domingo was my ancestor? Juan Domingo Romero had children with three women: Maria Barbara Martin, Maria Barbara Montoya and Barbara Torres. Was there one, two or three women?
There are at least two possible parents for Juan Domingo Romero: Francisco Xavier Romero/Paula Aguero and Antonio Romero/Rosalia Cortes. There is also a Juan Domingo Romero with parents unknown baptized at Santa Cruz. Possible parents of Maria Barbara are Jose Joaquin Torres and Pasquala Martin.
1. Albert Vidaurre, email@example.com. Ida Foraci tells me that Juan Domingo Romero born 1/23/1749 in Santa Cruz dela Canada was the son of Francisco Xavier Romero and Paula [Romero] Aguero.
2. Robert Martinez, Albuquerque, New Mexico. RMart38838@aol.com, 9 Apr 2001. Based on a baptismal record of Jose Ygnacio [son of Juan Domingo] listing a sister of Juan Domingo as Margarita Romero, madrina, and the following 1750 Taos Census, the parents of Juan Domingo Romero are Antonio Romero and Rosalia Cortes. The 1750 Census for the Taos area lists the following family grouping as Coyotes: Antonio Romero and Rosalia Cortes. Children: Maria Antonia, Margarita, Joseph Manuel, Carmen, Juan Domingo, Joseph and Joseph de nacion Apache, All Romeros.
3. Robert Martinez, Albuquerque, New Mexico. RMart38838@aol.com, 9 Apr 2001. Son of Juan Domingo named Jose Ygnacio and baptized at Picuris on 3 Feb 1783. The madrina was listed as "su ermana, Margarita Romero, vesina del Pueblo de San Geronimo de Taos.".
4. Frank Romero. Lainepain@aol.com. [Regarding wife of Juan Domingo Romero] I personally think that Barbara Martin/Montoya/Torres are one in the same person and she is the daughter of Jose Joaquin Torres and Paquala Martin.
If you have found any documents that can help clarify these relationships, please contact me. Here is a summary of the documents sent to me and also those documents I have found.
